Obama Administration Plans Forum on High Drug Prices
Trying to turn up the political heat on the pharmaceutical industry, the Obama administration announced on Tuesday that it would hold a forum this month on the high prices of some prescription drugs.
Hillary Rodham Clinton and other Democrats have called for efforts to stop price gouging by drugmakers.
The move came amid reports of price manipulation and opinion polls that identify drug prices as a top concern for many consumers and voters. Dr. Peter B. Bach said the forum would focus on “an incredibly important issue.” “We have a broken market for drugs,” said Dr. Bach, a frequent critic of pricing practices in the pharmaceutical industry. “Unconstrained price increases are being translated into unaffordable out-of-pocket costs for patients. Patients are not taking medicines that would help them because we can’t figure out how to get drugs priced according to their value.”
